I’m happy to share that two of my short stories have been published in Pandan Weekly, a literary magazine featuring stories from Asia and the diaspora.
Pandan Weekly is produced by SEA Lit Circle and edited by Stephanie Shi.
“The Boy Who Made Me Dream Again”
This short story highlights the challenges of a new mother who is raising a young child with autism.
As a pediatric speech-language pathologist, I have spent a lot of time listening to the stories of mothers who have children with autism. Their stories of grief, acceptance, love, and courage have changed much of my thinking about disability, and I had hoped that this little short story could honor their (and their children’s) experiences, while helping us be more patient and understanding in a world that lacks empathy and concern for people with disabilities.
This fantasy short story was inspired by the Biblical story of Hosea and Gomer and loosely pulls from Philippine mythology. I was hoping to recount how redemptive love is tested through betrayal and forgiveness, and how that same love can empower someone to overcome abuse and reclaim self-worth.
